Eyes wandering blankly,
Gripped by hazy sleepiness,
You surveyed the bustling lot
With slow-motion awareness.

Across the way,
I see you
Bobbing along with mom’s
Springing step.

Outlined against her golden halo
Your small shape held tightly.
Baby and boy inert
At the edge of sprung energy.

Watching, yet still removed
The people, cars, sounds
slow to register across
Your distant expression.

Moving toward you
I caught your eye –
And the glint of familiarity.
Pace quickening with anticipation.

You tracked me
Between cars, through people
Five, four, three, two steps more
And the world stopped.

Framed by mom’s smile
Your eyes called me,
Small arms reaching
And the world came to life.
